Abstract: The physical mechanism of explosive emission cathodes is reviewed. The properties of these cathodes are introduced in detail, including the threshold voltage, uniformity, plasma closure velocity, and life time. The experimental methods used in their study are also described, and some suggestions to improve their properties are given.
