Abstract: The rapidly emerging field of soft matter physics is briefly reviewed with emphasis on its impact on different applications. The fundamental problems in this field are examined. Based on a comparison of the status of research in the international community and domestic institutions, several suggestions for promoting soft matter physics in China are put forward.
