Abstract: The discovery and development of the laser is one of the most important scientific and technological advances of the twentieth century. An overview is presented of the main achievements of laser device technology and applications in a wide range of areas over the past fifty years, with emphasis on the development of high power lasers. The paper presents four points of enlightenment from fifty years of laser science and technology, and three directions for its future development.
